about

Lynn Loo is originally from Singapore and currently based in London. Loo made a transition from a background in music to filmmaking in 1997. She studied film and video at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and film archiving at University of East Anglia.

One way to describe her films is that they are compositions of images and sound that suggest narrative or convey an event without text or words. Unfinished Symphony (2001, 16mm), Train Ride With Mum (2004, video) and Conversations (2021-, video) are examples.

In 2004, she was introduced to expanded cinema film works in the UK, specifically from the 1970s. This broadened her exploration of filmmaking into an investigation of materials and processes and the presentation of work in performances with multiple projectors. Her first film of this kind is ‘0‘ (2004, 16mm), followed by Vowels  (2005, 2x 16mm) which used letterforms printed onto strips of film that also produced the soundtrack. Vowels is expanded to Vowels and Consonants in collaboration with Guy Sherwin. Her most recent of these works is a 3x 16mm projection performance piece, Washi MM (2017), that draws inspiration from one of sculptor artist Mary Martin’s drawings. Since 2005, she has continued to collaborate with Sherwin on film performances and projects.

Loo’s films have been included in numerous international festivals and gallery exhibitions. They are in the collection of Asian Film Archive in Singapore and He Xiangning Art Museum in China.

She is currently a Conservation Specialist at BFI National Film and Television Archive and an occasional visiting lecturer at Middlesex University.
